These series of videos shows how Master Joe Fitzgerald of Tang So Do defends against basic kicks (front kick, push kick, cut kick or round kick, and knee). Tang So Do has nice kicks and usually they can attack the low, middle and high line of the body. In FMA, since we are a weapons based system first (empty hand second, grappling third), I was taught not to kick past the waist area because anything higher can be attacked and countered with your opponents weapon (especially if it’s a long blade or stick). Also in empty hand situations, high kicks usually leave you vulnerable for counters such as takedowns or your opponent catching your kick and throwing you. But, I do believe that if you can pull off a high kick and land on your opponent, then why not?
